Spring Concert Review

On Saturday 23rd March we performed our Spring Concert at St Leonard’s Church with the Sussex Mozart Players, led by Maeve Jenkinson and four soloists, Yvonne Lloyd, Rebecca Hughes, Andrew Davies and Francis Melville. Our previous MD Colin Hughes performed on the keyboard as our regular accompanist John Eady was unavailable. The varied programme included an early Mozart piece – Benedictus sit Deus – five sacred pieces sang unaccompanied by our Chamber Choir, which was conducted by our Deputy MD Veronica Fewkes, Mozart’s Divertimento in F played by a string quartet from the orchestra and then in the second half, Mozart’s Requiem.

This was our first concert under the baton of our new Music Director Chris Dixon, who has been working us hard over the previous eleven weeks and managed to bring the best out of the choir. Veronica did an amazing job with the Chamber Choir who only had two hours of rehearsal time together prior to the day of the concert.

During the afternoon rehearsals we sensed that this was going to be a special evening, and the audience were in for a treat, and so it proved. We sang our hearts out and sounded better than we did in rehearsals, and the orchestra and soloists were outstanding.

One of our members who for various reasons was not able to take part on this occasion made this comment: “What a super evening. Soloists sang beautifully and the choir sounded amazing, in tune, balanced and well rehearsed. A lovely varied programme too, and so nice hearing an accompanying orchestra.” One of our audience sent this comment via our website: “I simply want to tell you that last night’s concert was for me rich, beautiful, moving and totally superb. Great Soloists, excellent Orchestra and wonderfully modulated sound from a Choir at its peak. Unforgettable was the handful of luminescent pearls conjured by the unaccompanied voices of the Chamber Choir. I send love and thanks to you all; every one.” That response makes all our hard work worthwhile!

Many thanks to the Vicar and members of St Leonard’s church for all the generous help and support they give us; thanks also to our new Concert Manager and other committee members who worked so hard behind the scenes to make it all happen. Many thanks especially to Chris, Veronica, and all our performers. Everyone put their heart and soul into last night’s performance and the result was a truly unforgettable evening of high quality music.
