Rich, Beautiful, Moving and Totally Superb
This was the reaction of Geoffrey to our Spring concert 2024 in St.Leonard’s in March. Incidentally, he has been supporting Seaford Choral Society performances for twenty years. It was a full house, despite the cold wind and extra chairs had to be found for latecomers. Among our loyal, enthusiastic audience was ninety five year Mabel, a former member.
The concert was special for a number of reasons. Firstly, it was the debut of our new conductor, Chris Dixon. Secondly, we were pleased to welcome back our previous conductor, Colin Hughes as accompanist and thrilled to be supported by The Sussex Mozart Players, ably led by Maeve Jenkinson. Finally, our four soloists; simply superb.
The joyousness of Mozart’s Benedictus sit Deus was followed by the sublime a cappella singing of our Chamber Choir, an exciting new development; introduced, trained and conducted by our new MD, Veronica Fewkes. They sang five sacred motets and the purity and luminosity of their twenty six voices elicited an emotional and touching reaction from our audience.
After Mozart’s Divertimento in F Major, played by our talented orchestra came the big one: Mozart’s Requiem, surely every choir’s favourite. There was drama, there was pathos and, however familiar the music, it was a profoundly uplifting experience for singers and audience alike. A memorable evening.
After a few days’ rest for our voices, we were back at St. Leonard’s on Good Friday with a very different Requiem – Fauré’s. This was our annual Almost Instant performance and, true to form, it attracted a large number of singers who joined us for a delicious tea as well as the breathtakingly beautiful music.
